Tile Takeover - Nonn's

Welcome to tile takeover! This week, we dove deep inside the world of tile and explored its different designs, materials, and uses. And because there are simply so many types of tile to choose from, we picked out four favorites, both new-age and old-school. So, whether you’ve got a sweet-spot for subway-style classics, or you’re interested in cool new kinds of tile, this week’s list has everything you’ll need to lay down some serious style.

Subway-Inspired Ceramic

Straight from the big apple, ceramic subway tile is one of the longest-running trends in tile backsplashes today! Simplistic in design, this ceramic tile offers a clean and classic look that has dazzled for decades, dating back to the early 1900s. Since first popping up in the New York underground, subway tile has taken form in backsplashes and floors in bathrooms and kitchens across the country. If you want a new take on a tried-and-true design, add something new; Instead of sticking with the standard white on white tile/grout combo, use colored tiles or black grout to make your subway tile stand out.

Pro Tip: Blow it up! To turn a classic tile style contemporary, simply increase the size. Traditional subway tile is 3×6″, but if you double the size, you’ll double the style. Now that’s math we like to do.

Classy Glass

When it comes to standing out, glass tile is in a league of its own. What glass brings to tile that no other option offers is its unique ability to manipulate light. Depending on the opacity and color, glass tile can reflect, refract or absorb ambient light like no other material. Because of this, colored glass tiles quickly become the most vibrant choice in the category. If you want to express yourself while adding some light and life to your kitchen, go with glass.

Metal Muse

If you are looking for a trend-setting tile that will have a long and stylish shelf-life, try metal! Metal tile has been trending for quite some time now, ranging from aluminum to stainless steel, and even copper. That’s right, they do more than press pennies out of the stuff. The best thing about metal is it can be as rugged and rustic or as clean and contemporary as you want. Our favorite metal type is the sleek and shine of wavy aluminum tile designs. Since aluminum is so malleable, it’s easy to make modern patterns that stand out. But whether your style is mid-century modern or post-modernism, we guarantee there’s a metal tile type made just for you.

Pro Tip: Don’t stop the style at the tile! For a cohesive look and feel, keep the metal going throughout your home by updating your cabinet and drawer hardware to match. Trust us, these metal design choices are well worth their weight.

Stunning Stone

Our final and favorite type of tile is beautiful and stunning stone. Just like countertops, stone is synonymous with quality–and the design options are nearly endless. Plain or patterned, coarse or smooth, light or dark, stone carries more character than any other type of tile. If you want to brighten up your bathroom, just put up some smooth, light marble tile. The lighter and smoother the stone, the more light it reflects, making your bathroom look brighter and feel cleaner than ever before.
